RESUMEN

AIM: This study aimed to illuminate meanings of person-centredness as narrated by nursing home managers in nursing homes rated as highly person-centred. DESIGN: A phenomenological hermeneutical approach was used. METHODS: Twelve nursing home managers in 11 highly person-centred nursing homes in 7 municipalities in Sweden were included in this interview study. The findings were interpreted, reflected and discussed through the lens of Ricoeur. RESULTS: Meanings of person-centredness could be understand as moving between doing and being through knowing, sensing, sharing and giving for person-centredness. These aspects contributed via knowledge, understanding, interaction and action that involved doing for and being with older persons through these caring dimensions. By moving between doing for, being with and being part of the overall nursing home narrative, knowing, sensing, sharing and giving could support the persons' identity in different ways. This may also contribute to sense-making, preserving dignity and promoting self-esteem when aiming to provide a good life for older persons in nursing homes, within an ever-present ethical frame. NO PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: This study illuminated meanings of person-centredness as narrated by nursing home managers. No patient of public contribution was investigated.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that person-centred care can be beneficially implemented and sustained, even though barriers remain that prevent uptake in clinical practice. Understanding barriers to person-centred care seems important, as this has an impact on care practices and resident outcomes. Moreover, there is limited knowledge about nursing home managers' descriptions of barriers when leading person-centred care. OBJECTIVES: To explore barriers to leading person-centred care as narrated by nursing home managers. METHODS: A descriptive qualitative design was used to collect data using individual interviews with 12 nursing home managers in highly person-centred nursing homes. Data were analysed using content analysis. RESULTS: Multi-level barriers to leading person-centred care were identified on the (1) person level, (2) team level and (3) organisational level. Placing professional and family considerations ahead of resident considerations was described as a barrier on the personal level (1). Also, staff's divergent care values, processes, and priorities together with turnover and low foundational knowledge were identified as barriers on the team level (2). On an organisational level (3), constrained finances, functional building design and group level rostering were identified as barriers. CONCLUSION: Multi-level barriers influence nursing home managers' ability to lead and promote person-centred care. Promoting the development of person-centred practices requires efforts to eliminate barriers on person, team and organisational level. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Identifying and overcoming barriers at various levels in nursing home care has the potential to promote person-centred practices. This study can inform stakeholders and policymakers of challenges and complexities in person-centred practices. Multi-level strategies are needed to target challenges at person-, team- and organisational level when striving to develop person-centred care.

BACKGROUND: Self-determination has been shown to be an important factor in mental health and wellbeing, but from the homecare recipients' point of view, autonomy and self-determination is not fully integrated into homecare services. The aim of this study was to explore older adults' experiences of self-determination when needing homecare services. METHODS: In 2018, a qualitative descriptive study was conducted and a convenience sample of 15 older adults from 3 homecare service facilities were invited to participate in individual interviews. Data were analysed using qualitative content analyse. RESULTS: The theme Transitioning from self-determination as independence towards self-determination as shared decision-making emerged through the older adults' narratives. This 'transition' is one in which older adult's understanding of self-determination and self-esteem was transitioning towards the acceptance of shared decision-making. The person's inner strength and willingness to make decisions was promoting to enact and preserve independence. Accepting one's dependence on others and being in a positive atmosphere were described as promoting self-determination and shared decision-making, and vice versa. The above overarching theme permeated all subthemes, which included: mobilising inner strength to enact independence; accepting increasing dependence on others; and being influenced by the atmosphere. CONCLUSIONS: The study contributes increased understanding of older adults' experiences of self-determination. The results can act as a guide when planning future person-centred care interventions in the context of homecare services and help improve homecare services' ability to meet the needs of older adults. To summarise, older adults' reflections on their own self-determination highlighted relationships with other people as important for shared decision-making, which could help preserve older adults' autonomy and self-esteem.

BACKGROUND: Based on previous evidence person-centred care (PCC) as a quality indicator is important in long-term care (LTC) settings for older people. Effective ways to increase nurses' person-centred care competence are missing. AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of a continuing education (CE) intervention named 'Person First-Please' (PFP) for improving nurses' PPC competence and its connection to PPC climate. METHODS: Quasi-experimental cluster design with intervention and control groups was carried out in LTC settings for older people. The intervention group (n = 77) received a 10-week CE intervention, with control group (n = 123) working as usual. The primary outcome was professional nurses' PCC competence. Secondary outcome was the PCC climate as perceived by nurses and, residents with their next of kin. Measurements were conducted pre-/post-intervention and after 6 weeks using the validated, Person-centred Care Competence scale and the Person-centred Care Climate questionnaire, staff and patient versions. Data was analysed with descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS: PCC competence was significantly increased in the intervention group and remained after 6 weeks of follow-up. PCC climate increased in the intervention group in total score and also in all sub-scales, across residents with their next of kin. The control group did not show any significant change. Comparisons of PCC competence and PCC climate in time between intervention and control groups confirmed that changes seen between groups were statistically significant in intervention group. LIMITATIONS: Measurements were self-assessments, which may have been affected by bias, especially in context of competence assessment. CONCLUSION: The intervention was effective in increasing professional nurses' PCC competence and on person-centred care climate in long-term care settings for older people.

BACKGROUND: The number of Indonesian care staff working in hospitals and long-term care facilities caring for persons with dementia in Japan is increasing; however, there is no instrument available in the Indonesian language to assess their dementia care practice. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to translate the Person-centered Care Assessment Tool (P-CAT) and evaluate its psychometric properties in a sample of Indonesian care staff working in dementia care and long-term care facilities in Japan. METHODS: This is a descriptive, methodological, and cross-sectional study. The P-CAT was translated into the Indonesian language. The draft was administered to Indonesian care staff (n = 218) working at long-term care facilities in Japan. Data were analysed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), known-group validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability. RESULTS: EFA showed three-factor and CFA of the three-factor indicated that the model had an acceptable fit (chi-squared statistics/degree of freedom = 1.78, comparative fit index = 0.94, root mean square error of approximation = 0.06) with a slightly different structure compared to the original P-CAT. Regarding known-group validity, the P-CAT total score was significantly higher for those who had training in dementia, who knew about person-centred care, and who showed satisfaction in the job. Internal consistency (Cronbach's α) of the total scale was 0.68 which is considered acceptable, and the test-retest reliability intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.61 which is considered moderate. CONCLUSION: The Indonesian P-CAT indicated sound validity and reliability to measure person-centred care among Indonesian care staff working in dementia care and long-term care facilities in Japan. IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE: The development of Indonesian P-CAT allows the evaluation of dementia care, promotes and further improves person-centred care for persons with dementia provided by Indonesian care staff working in long-term care facilities in Japan.

BACKGROUND: To achieve the best treatment of heart failure, it is important to use all recommended drugs at their target doses. Given that underuse of medications can occur in individuals with cognitive impairment, we investigated the filled prescriptions and target doses of heart failure medication for older individuals with and without cognitive impairment as well as associated factors. METHODS: The study was based on two separate datasets. The first dataset, which was based on data from questionnaires sent to nursing homes in Sweden, included 405 individuals with heart failure. The data were linked with the Swedish Prescribed Drug Register and the National Patient Register to obtain information regarding filled prescriptions of heart failure medications and heart failure diagnoses among the population. In the second dataset, medical records of individuals aged 75 years or older admitted to a hospital in northern Sweden were reviewed and individuals with heart failure were identified. Target doses of heart failure medications were evaluated in 66 individuals who lived at home. RESULTS: Filled prescriptions of mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists and loop diuretics were significantly more common in individuals without cognitive impairment (OR 1.087; 95% CI 1.026-1.152, p < 0.05) and (OR 1.057; 95% CI 1.017-1.098, p < 0.05), respectively. There were no significant differences between individuals with and without cognitive impairment in terms of achieving target doses for any of the drug classes. A higher age was associated with fewer filled prescriptions and less ability to reach the target doses of beta blockers (OR 0.950; 95% CI 0.918-0.984, p < 0.05) and (OR 0.781; 95% CI 0.645-0.946, p < 0.05), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that individuals with cognitive impairment are partly undertreated for heart failure in that they had fewer filled prescriptions of important heart medications. Separately, the relatively low proportion of older individuals reaching target doses is an important observation and indicates that treatment of heart failure could be further optimised among older individuals.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore the impact of nursing home leadership and staffing characteristics on staff job satisfaction, health and intention to leave. BACKGROUND: The number of older people has outpaced growth in the nursing home workforce worldwide. Identifying predictors with the potential to positively impact staff job satisfaction, health and intentions to leave are important. Leadership of the nursing home manager can be one such predictor. DESIGN: Cross-sectional design. METHODS: A sample of 2985 direct care staff in 190 nursing homes in 43 randomly selected municipalities in Sweden completed surveys on leadership, job satisfaction, self-rated health and intention to leave (response rate 52%). Descriptive statistics and Generalised Estimating Equations were conducted. The STROBE reporting checklist was applied. RESULTS: Nursing home managers' leadership was positively related to job satisfaction, self-rated health and low intention to leave. Lower staff educational levels were related to poorer health and lower job satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS: Nursing home leadership plays a significant role in the job satisfaction, self-reported health and intention to leave of direct care staff. Low education levels among staff seem to negatively influence staff health and job satisfaction, suggesting that educational initiatives for less-educated staff could be beneficial for improving staff health and job satisfaction. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Managers seeking to improve staff job satisfaction can consider how they support, coach and provide feedback. Recognising staff achievement at work can contribute to high job satisfaction. One important implication for managers is to offer continuing education to staff with lower or no education, given the large amount of uneducated direct care workers in aged care and the impact this may have on staff job satisfaction and health. AIM: To evaluate patients' and family members' perceived support from light and color before, compared with after an evidence-based design (EBD) intervention at an emergency department (ED) using a validated instrument-the Light and Color Questionnaire (LCQ). BACKGROUND: EDs offer acute care day and night. Thus, a supportive physical environment where light and color is crucial for how the milieu is experienced is vital. Research is limited on how care settings are perceived as supportive by users. METHODS: Quasi-experimental evaluation of the refurbishing and remodeling of an ED by an expert group of nurse managers, nursing staff, nursing researchers and architects in south Sweden. LCQ includes dimensions "maximizing awareness and orientation," "maximizing safety and security," "supporting functional abilities," "providing privacy," "opportunities for personal control" (not for LCQ-Color), and "regulation and quality of stimulation." LCQ was analyzed and compared in 400 surveys from 100 patients and 100 family members before the intervention and 100 patients and 100 family members after the intervention. RESULTS: The LCQ total score significantly improved after the intervention for both patients and family members. Four of the six dimensions of LCQ Light subscale scores were significantly higher for family members, and three of the six dimensions were significantly higher for patients after the intervention. The LCQ Color subscale score showed significant improvements for all five dimensions for both patients and family members after the intervention. CONCLUSION: This study showed improved perceived support from light and color in the physical environment for patients and family members after an EBD intervention at an emergency department using a validated instrument-the Light and Color Questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Participatory research has been described to improve the relevance of research findings for the society in terms of quality of healthcare services and other public benefits. Nevertheless, there is limited guidance on how to conduct participatory research, and especially in relation to persons living in residential care facilities. To make the voices of this group heard, we therefore take a stance in the democratic approach to participatory research, and we have applied the theoretical framework Model of Human Occupation (MoHO) on participation to evaluate photo-elicitation interviews as a participatory research method with this group. METHODS: A total of 13 persons living in two residential care facilities were involved in the study and asked to take photographs of their everyday life over one week. They were then invited to an individual interview to narrate the meaning of the photographs and to describe how they experienced the photo-elicitation method. The interviews were analysed in the six steps of theoretically driven reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: The findings are described in the theme 'Uncovering hidden abilities for participation in research' that describes how photo elicitation interviews facilitated the older persons' participation in research. This is illustrated by four sub-themes: 'Bridging the ageing body', 'Altering habituation to everyday life', 'Empowering storytelling', and 'Negotiating the institutional culture'. CONCLUSIONS: Our study findings support further application and evaluation of photo-elicitation interviews as a method for participatory research in residential care facilities. The major finding is how photo-elicitation interviews were used to reduce the impact of the institutional culture on the older persons' participation in research. The method is, however, not without limitations and we encourage researchers to study the dynamic relationship between physical, social, and cultural aspects of residential care facilities in relation to the use of photo-elicitation interviews with the persons living there.


This study was designed to improve the opportunities for persons living in residential care facilities to participate in research on their own terms. Digital instant print cameras were used by 13 older persons to document their everyday life at two different residential care facilities. The photographs were then followed up with individual interviews, during which the older persons were asked to share their experiences of using the cameras and to tell stories about the meaning of the photographs. Analysing the interviews, we found that the older persons could participate in the study in a way that they did not believe was possible before. They were not used to being given responsibility, and they felt limited by physical and cognitive impairment. Participating in the study, they realised that they had something to contribute with, and that there were aspects of everyday life that they really enjoyed. They felt empowered to share their stories, and we encourage researchers to continue evaluating photographs in combination with interviews in residential care facilities.

BACKGROUND: Person-centred care requires that nurses are competent in this approach to care. There may be an association between person-centred care competence and person-centred care climate, but it has not been demonstrated in the literature. This is the justification for the survey study to gain staff's perceptions of such a relationship. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to analyse the levels and associations between person-centred care competence and the person-centred care climate as assessed by professional nurses in long-term care settings for older people. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional survey design with cluster sampling was used to recruit professional nurses of different levels from six long-term care institutions for older people. Data were collected using the Patient-centred Care Competency scale (PCC) and the Person-centred Climate Questionnaire staff version (PCQ-S) in September 2021 and analysed with descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS: The mean score on the PCC was rated at a good level of 3.80 (SD 0.45), and the PCQ-S was rated at a good level of 3.87 (SD 0.53). The correlation between PCC and PCQ-S total scores (r = .37, p < .001) indicated that person-centred care competence and person-centred care climate were associated. No associations were detected between nurses' educational levels and PCC (p = .19) or PCQ-S (p = .13) or in terms of age or work experience. CONCLUSIONS: The results provide insights into competence and climate levels of person-centred care and preliminary evidence of an association between nurses' assessed competence in person-centred care and the perceived person-centred care climate in long-term care. Nurses' individual characteristics did not appear to affect the level of person-centred care competence or climate. In the future professional nurses of different levels could benefit from effective continuing education in person-centred care. BACKGROUND: Adopting a person-centered care approach has transformed different healthcare settings worldwide. However, this concept has gained little attention in many Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric characteristics of the Arabic person-centered climate questionnaire-patient version, measuring to what extent the climate of health care settings is perceived as being person-centered. METHOD: This is a psychometric analysis study. The original validated version of the English Person-Centered Climate Questionnaire-Patient version (PCQ-P) was translated into Arabic and tested among a sample of hospital patients (n = 300) in Saudi Arabia using translation and back translation procedures. For psychometric evaluation, statistical analyses of validity and reliability were used, including exploratory factor analysis as well as conformity analysis. RESULTS: The Arabic version of the person-centered climate questionnaire-patient version-showed good reliability as the Cronbach's alpha value of the total of 17 items was 0.84, and the Cronbach's alpha values of the three sub-scales (safety, everydayness, and hospitality) were 0.83, 0.56, and 0.68, respectively. Internal consistency results were high in terms cof orrelation coefficient for all 17 items. The exploratory factor analysis identified the three factors (safety, everydayness, and hospitality) responsible for 47.174% of the total variance. CONCLUSION: The Arabic version of the PCQ-P showed satisfactory reliability and validity for measuring patients' perceptions of person-centeredness in Arab healthcare settings. This Arabic version will be accessible to those interested in generating and using empirical evidence to promote a patient-centered care approach in Arab healthcare settings. The results of this study can be used as a starting point for assessing and developing a person-centered care culture in Saudi hospitals and other Arab countries in the Middle East.

BACKGROUND: The relevance of person-centred care as an optimising approach to the quality of care provided to older adults has sparked the development of important instruments that measure this approach at residential care facilities and requires validation for the Portuguese population. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to adapt and validate the Person-centered Care Assessment Tool (P-CAT) to the Portuguese population. METHODS: The P-CAT assesses the level of person-centred care provided by residential care facilities, according to staff. The process of adapting the P-CAT to the Portuguese population includes its translation, backtranslation and a pilot study. To recruit participants for the validation study, we contacted the Portuguese residential care facilities with emails provided in the official registries, and the study was also divulged on social media. RESULTS: The study had the participation of 573 staff members. The mean score of P-CAT was 50.76 (SD = 7.65). The exploratory factor analysis showed three dimensions: the extent of care personalisation, the amount of organisational support and the degree of environmental accessibility. The results show good internal consistency for the total scale (α = 0.809) and good temporal stability in the test-retest assessed by intraclass correlation coefficient (0.893). CONCLUSIONS: This version of the P-CAT for the Portuguese population has shown adequate psychometric properties and contributes to the study of care provided at residential care facilities in Portugal through self-reporting from staff. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: The availability of this instrument is useful for professional practice and research purposes and supports technical and scientific advancements that are necessary for the evolution of care frameworks.

BACKGROUND: Promoting healthy work environment as a manager in nursing homes is important to safeguard staff health and well-being as well as care quality when facing increasing demands. The impact of leadership on staff work environment needs further exploration. OBJECTIVES: To describe longitudinal changes in nursing home leadership, direct care staff characteristics, job strain and social support. METHODS: This study has a repeated cross-sectional design, a five-year follow-up study. Nursing home staff in 181 corresponding units (n = 1253 in 2014 and n = 1176 in 2019) completed surveys about leadership, staff job strain and social support in a five-year follow-up study. Descriptive and regression analyses were conducted. RESULTS: A higher degree of leadership defined by coaching and providing direct feedback to care staff, handling conflicts in a constructive way and having control of the clinical work, was significantly associated with a lower degree of job strain and a higher degree of social support among staff, with stronger associations at follow-up. The proportion of enrolled nurses increased significantly at follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Leadership is increasingly important for staff work environment, especially in times of increased workload and decreasing collegiality and deteriorating work atmosphere at work. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Stakeholder and policy makers in nursing home care may reflect on how managers' leadership is prioritised in these environments because such leadership is associated with staff job strain and social support. Managers striving to improve the work situation of staff may consider their own role and allow flexibility in how and when the work can be performed.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore changes to resident thriving in Swedish nursing homes over a 5-year period and describe changes in associated factors. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were collected from a randomised sample of Swedish nursing homes in 2013/2014 (baseline) and 2018/2019 (follow-up). Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, and chi squared tests were used to statistically evaluate differences between the samples. Simple and multiple linear regression analyses were used to explore associations between thriving and the study variables. RESULTS: Resident characteristics were relatively consistent between the full baseline (N = 4831) and follow-up (N = 3894) samples. Within a sub-sample of nursing homes that participated in both data collections mean thriving scores were found to have increased from 152.9 to 155.2 (p ≤ 0.003; d =0.09) and overall neuropsychiatric index scores had decreased from 16.0 to 14.3 (p ≤ 0.004; d =0.09), as had the prevalence of several neuropsychiatric symptoms. Thriving was found to have a positive association with the neuropsychiatric symptom of elation/euphoria, and negative associations with the symptoms of aggression/agitation, depression/dysphoria, apathy, and irritability. CONCLUSIONS: The results show an increase in overall thriving scores and a decrease in overall neuropsychiatric scores between baseline and follow-up. This study confirmed associations between thriving and certain neuropsychiatric symptoms and established comparative knowledge regarding changes in resident thriving, characteristics, and symptom prevalence. These findings could inform future care and organisational policies to support thriving in nursing homes, particularly among residents at risk of lower thriving due to cognitive impairment or neuropsychiatric symptoms.

AIM: To evaluate the effects of a person-centred and thriving-promoting intervention on nursing home residents´ experiences of thriving and person-centredness of the environment, and to evaluate if the effects varied between female and male residents. DESIGN: A multi-centre, non-equivalent controlled group before-after intervention design. METHODS: Six nursing homes in Australia, Norway and Sweden were allocated to either intervention or control group. The intervention comprised a staff educational programme. A survey using proxy-ratings by staff was administered before (T0), immediately after (T1) and six months after (T2) the intervention. The sample varied between 205 and 292 residents. Linear regression models were used to explore effects. RESULTS: Statistically significant effects were found on experiences of thriving and person-centredness of the environment. These effects were significant for male residents but not for female residents. The results emphasize the importance of individually tailored social and recreational activities.

AIM: To evaluate the reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the Person-Centered Care Assessment Tool (P-CAT-J) in a Japanese long-term care setting. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey using self-administered questionnaires distributed among the nurses or care staff of 2000 special nursing homes randomly selected nationwide using stratified random sampling according to each prefecture's ratio of numbers of facilities. The internal consistency of the tool was calculated using Cronbach's α and construct validity was assessed using confirmatory factor analysis. The criterion-related validity of the scale was based on the partial correlation between the possible outcomes of person-centered care (PCC). RESULTS: In total, 324 samples were analyzed after excluding samples with incomplete P-CAT-J. Cronbach's α value for the entire P-CAT-J was adequate, although internal consistency values for each factor were not strong. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed an acceptable value after adjusting for error variables. The partial correlation coefficients among workplace satisfaction, quality of care, PCC implementation and total P-CAT-J score were significantly correlated. CONCLUSIONS: The overall P-CAT-J was developed with good reliability and acceptable criteria based on the responses of long-term care staff in Japan. The P-CAT-J has the potential for international comparison and can provide long-term care staff with PCC examples to learn relevant actions and concepts. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2022; 22: 344-349.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To develop the theoretical understanding of the process of providing person-centred home care for people with dementia. BACKGROUND: People with dementia are increasingly cared for at home by family members and home care staff. Care of people with dementia should be person-centred; however, little is known about how home care staff understand and enact person-centred care in their daily work. DESIGN: Grounded theory. METHODS: Home care staff (n = 29) were recruited from home care services specialised in providing care for people with dementia. Group interviews were conducted, and a tentative theoretical model for providing person-centred home care to people with dementia was outlined. Nine of the participants were then individually interviewed to further develop the model. The analysis was conducted parallel to the data collection, and hypotheses concerning the evolving theoretical model were continuously tested in the following interviews. The COREQ checklist for qualitative studies was used in reporting the study. RESULTS: Person-centred home care of people with dementia was conceptualised as a series of processes: Getting ready, getting in, giving care, getting out and finalising the story, each with subprocesses. Theatre metaphors were used to describe how the care was provided. A core process, Enacting and re-enacting familiarity, was at centre in all processes. CONCLUSIONS: In the person-centred care of people with dementia, familiarity had to be established and continuously fostered. When familiarity was in place, the care recipient and the home care staff acted as a team to perform the care. The theoretical works of Goffman were used to interpret the results. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: The study provides a model for person-centred care of people with dementia at home that deepens the understanding of its processes, prerequisites and outcomes. The model can inform education and administration of home care for people with dementia.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim was to explore changes in nursing home managers' leadership, person-centred care and psychosocial climate comparing matched units in a five-year follow-up and to explore the significance of managers' educational qualifications and the ownership of nursing homes for perceived leadership, person-centred care and psychosocial climate in the follow-up data. BACKGROUND: Leadership has been described as crucial for person-centred care and psychosocial climate even though longitudinal data are lacking. The significance of managerial leadership, its characteristics, managerial qualifications and ownership of nursing homes for perceived leadership, person-centred care and psychosocial climate also needs further exploration. DESIGN: Repeated cross-sectional study. METHODS: This study used valid and reliable measures of leadership, person-centred care, psychosocial climate and demographic variables collected from managers and staff n = 3605 in 2014 and n = 2985 in 2019. Descriptive and regression analyses were used. The STROBE checklist was used in reporting this study. RESULTS: Leadership was still positively significantly associated to person-centred care in a five-year follow-up, but no changes in strength were seen. Leadership was still positively significantly associated with psychosocial climate, with stronger associations at follow-up. Six leadership characteristics increased over time. It was also shown that a targeted education for nursing home managers was positively associated with person-centred care. CONCLUSIONS: Leadership is still pivotal for person-centred care and psychosocial climate. Knowledge of nursing home managers' leadership, characteristics and educational qualifications of significance for person-centred delivery provides important insights when striving to improve such services. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: The findings can be used for management and clinical practice development initiatives because it was shown that nursing home managers' leadership is vital to person-centred care practices and improves the climate for both staff and residents in these environments.
